Subrahmanian Nampoothiri (Thuppan Thirumeni) of Akkappallil Illom who was a sanskrit scholar and ardent devotee of Durga Bhagavathi, belongs to Velliyottillam, who relocated from Payyannur to Kottayam during the Tipu Sultan invasion period.
Thuppan Thirumeni was a Sanskrit scholar who was well versed with Jyothisham, Prashnam , Thanthrikam and Mathrikam and also a Kathakali lover, who had written various Attakkathas in Sanskrit language.
He was the chief priest of various temples including Kiliroor, Thaliyilkkotta etc and had his upasana with Durga Bhagavathi and Chottanikkara Devi.
Thuppan Thirumeni has also served as the chief priest in Sasthamkunnu temple, which today proclaimed as the famous Satha temple in Kottayam.
Velliyottillam had spilt to 3 (Kizhakke Velliyodu, Padinjare Velliyodu and Akkappallil Illoms) and the Thevaram (Dieties) which was the anscestoral property was also distributed among them for daily poojas. Thus Akkappallil Illom had it’s Thevarappura with idols of Bhagavathi, Chathur Bahu (Maha Vishnu), Ganapathi, Maha lakshmi and Salagramams representing Lord Shiva.
V S Govindan Nampoothiri, the Valiya Thirumeni of Akkappallil Illom had learned the poojas , Thanthra vidyas, Prahnam and Jyothisham from his father during the early ages. Along with his official responsibilities as a government servant with Education department, he continued to practice his Dharma - to help and support the needy with Jyothisham and poojas, along with serving as the chief priest at temples including Vayaskara Temple, Sasthamkunnu, Thattunkal Bhagavathi etc.
